My seasonal cleaning list: what I actually do (and what you can skip)

Circle of Seasons By Oct 16, 2025 No Comments

Every season comes with its own rhythm. Just as the garden shifts, the pantry changes, and the light slants differently through the windows, I’ve found my cleaning habits fall into a seasonal rhythm too. Over time, I’ve let go of the pressure to tackle every chore on a checklist. Instead, I focus on what truly makes my home feel fresh, cozy, and lived in—while happily skipping the tasks that never made a difference for us.

At The Quiet Harvest, we sometimes recommend products that make homesteading, cooking, and cozy living a little easier. When you click on one of our Amazon or affiliate links and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission—at no extra cost to you. It’s one way we keep this space thriving, so we can continue sharing recipes, garden wisdom, and quiet living inspiration. Thank you for supporting us in this simple, meaningful way.

Spring feels like a reset. As the days lengthen, I open the windows, shake out the rugs, and wash the curtains. I sweep under the furniture and donate anything that has quietly piled up over the winter months. What I don’t do? I don’t scrub grout with a toothbrush or dust every baseboard. A quick vacuum along the edges does the trick, and I’d rather spend that energy outside planting seeds.

Summer: light and practical

Summer cleaning is more about maintenance than deep scrubbing. With windows open and fans running, dust settles quickly, so I wipe surfaces down often and keep floors swept. I wash bedding more frequently and switch to lighter blankets. I don’t polish silver, shine windows weekly, or iron linens. In the heat, the goal is comfort and ease, not perfection.

Autumn: preparing for coziness

As nights grow cooler, I give the house a little more attention. This is when I deep clean the kitchen, reorganize pantry shelves, and check blankets and quilts for laundering. I make sure the entryway is ready for muddy boots and that candles are stocked for darker evenings (and the inevitable power outages that we seem to get more frequently). I skip waxing floors or fussing over streak-free glass. No one notices the shine when the house smells like cinnamon bread.

Winter: tending, not overdoing

Winter is a season for tending, not striving. I keep the kitchen tidy, wipe down door handles and light switches more often, and do a quick refresh of closets to rotate warm layers to the front. I do not pull out appliances to scrub behind them or spend hours polishing furniture. A little dust left behind the sofa is less important than curling up on it with a book.

The freedom of skipping

I used to believe a “real” homemaker ticked every box on seasonal cleaning charts. But now I know that skipping some tasks isn’t lazy—it’s wise. I’ve learned that caring for a home isn’t about chasing an impossible standard. It’s about making space feel comfortable and welcoming for the people who live in it.

A list that lives with the seasons

My seasonal cleaning list isn’t perfect, but it’s mine. It flexes with the year, with my energy, and with what our family needs most in the moment. There’s satisfaction in doing what matters, and relief in letting the rest go. After all, a home feels truly clean not when every corner sparkles, but when it gives us room to rest, gather, and simply live.
